Spice Up Your London: Must-Try Indian Restaurants for an Epic Feast

London is home to some of the best Indian cuisine outside India, and I've had the pleasure of trying a few gems that never disappoint. Here’s a roundup of my top five Indian restaurants:

1. Bombay Bustle

Located in the heart of Mayfair, Bombay Bustle blends traditional Mumbai street food with high-end dining, making it a favourite among food enthusiasts. The restaurant’s chic, vintage-inspired decor is reminiscent of Mumbai’s old railway system, providing a unique ambiance. Must-tries include the Samosa Chaat for a crunchy, tangy start, followed by the rich Paneer Butter Masala paired with soft, buttery naan. Seafood lovers will appreciate the Kerala Fish Curry, which is perfectly complemented by the flaky Malabar Paratha. While the menu can be a bit on the pricier side, the impeccable flavours and dining experience make it worthwhile, particularly for special occasions.

2. Tamil Prince

Tucked away in Islington, Tamil Prince has become a beloved spot for those seeking authentic South Indian flavours. Despite its limited menu, each dish is a testament to the chef’s expertise, ensuring that what they do offer is prepared with precision. The Onion Bhajia is crispy and well-seasoned, while the Chicken Lollipop delivers a burst of bold, spicy flavours. For mains, the Channa Bhatura, a fluffy deep-fried bread served with chickpea curry, is a must-try, as is the Dal paired with fragrant Coconut Rice. The cosy atmosphere and emphasis on quality over quantity make this a fantastic spot for a relaxed, flavourful meal. Their cocktails are also highly recommended.

3. Tamil Crown

The newly opened sister restaurant to Tamil Prince, Tamil Crown expands on its sibling’s successful formula but offers a wider menu and a livelier setting. Located in Angel, the restaurant has already gained a reputation for its creative take on South Indian cuisine. Highlights from the menu include Okra Fries and Lime Leaf Roasted Chicken with pineapple chutney, offering a unique fusion of flavours. The Robata lamb chops, Uttapam with spicy coconut chutney and Aubergine Curry are particularly notable for their robust spices and well-balanced textures. While the space is limited, making reservations essential, the effort is well worth it for an exceptional meal in a lively, vibrant setting.

4. Dishoom

With multiple locations across London, Dishoom has achieved iconic status, known not just for its food but also for its evocative, Bombay café-style decor. The restaurant’s homage to Irani cafés of old Bombay makes for an atmospheric dining experience. Their famous House Black Dal, simmered for hours to achieve a creamy consistency, is a must-order dish. Equally recommended are the Chicken Ruby, a tender curry with garlic naan, and the Keema Pau, a spiced lamb dish served with buttered buns. Dishoom offers something for everyone, from vegetarians to meat lovers, and the friendly staff further enhances the overall dining experience. It’s perfect for casual outings or special events.

5. Bombay Chow Brasserie, Northwood

Situated just outside central London in Northwood, Bombay Chow Brasserie offers an extensive menu of Indian and Indo-Chinese dishes, ideal for groups and families. The restaurant is spacious, with views overlooking a golf course, adding to its appeal for larger gatherings. Signature dishes like the Spinach Chaat and Lamb Chops deliver bold flavours and creative presentations. Indo-Chinese options such as Gobi Manchurian, Chicken Manchurian, Hakka Noodles and Fried Rice cater to those looking for something different from the usual Indian fare. The Paneer Tikka Masala and Kolkata Chicken are perfect examples of classic, comforting curries, best enjoyed with their well-known garlic naan. A slightly more informal setting, this restaurant is perfect for relaxed group dining.

6. Fatt Pundit

A unique Indo-Chinese restaurant located in Soho and Covent Garden, Fatt Pundit takes inspiration from the street food of Kolkata’s Tangra neighbourhood. Known for its limited but innovative menu, the restaurant’s dishes are bold, flavour-packed, and beautifully presented. Standouts include the crispy Okra Salt ‘n’ Pepper and Hakka Chilli Paneer Lettuce Cups, a playful fusion of Indian and Chinese flavours. The Malabar Curry with tiger prawns and Burnt Ginger Rice is a satisfying main course, while their inventive cocktails perfectly complement the food. With its unique blend of cuisines, Fatt Pundit offers a refreshingly different take on Indian dining in London.
